Day 46 - Kuwait

This morning as I was getting ready to go back to work I looked out the window and saw...nothing. It was as if a beige fog had settled in as far as I could see. Making my way to the car I strained to see as far as I could. I reckoned that my visibility was less than a mile. A massive dust storm was underway, and fine particulate sand was up in the air. Unlike dust devils, which whip the sand into a funnel cloud and stings upon contact, this dust storm just hung as far as the eye could see. As I felt the wind blowing I couldn't help but wonder how much sand was going straight into my lungs.

I met my new group of students today. They are a quieter bunch than the previous ones. Hopefully over the next couple of days I'll figure out where they're at and be able to better connect with them.

After class I went out to the bus stop to catch the shuttle to the parking lot. The dust was so thick I couldn't see the sun. The effect of the dust blocking the sun was that it was easier on the eyes as my sunglasses broke and I haven't replaced them yet. Also, it was a bit cooler too! If I could say there is a "bright" side to this dust storm, that would be it.

Back at the hotel, I flopped on the bed and took another 2-hour nap. When I woke up I had to push myself to get ready for a tennis game. I am showing signs of improvement, losing 4-6 tonight. After tennis I got some work done, ate dinner and caught up with the family. It's sometime after midnight, and I need to crawl back into bed. We have a conference call for The Grapevine Project at 5:00am tomorrow morning (10:00pm Sunday night in Detroit). Take care!
